The Lantern Theatre in Sheffield, has a fascinating and storied history. Originally constructed as a private theatre for a wealthy cutlery manufacturer's family during the Victorian era, it later transformed into a dance school in the 1920s. Despite facing periods of abandonment, neglect, and even bombings during the Second World War, the historically significant building has endured and stands as one of the few remaining functioning historic venues of its kind. Rediscovered and lovingly restored in the 1950s by the enterprising actress and drama teacher, Dilys Guite, along with a small group of friends, the theatre was brought back to life for the enjoyment of everyone. Today, the Lantern Theatre is owned by the Dilys Guite Players, an in-house community theatre group, who continue the tradition of offering an exciting and diverse program of events throughout the year, making it one of Sheffield's most intimate and atmospheric spaces to enjoy theatrical performances.
