Overview

The Library Theatre in Sheffield, has a rich and varied history that dates back to its original design as a lecture hall in 1934. Initially permitted to host private performances for non-paying audiences, drama productions were limited during its early years to student shows before invited guests due to income tax regulations. During World War II, the theatre served as an air raid shelter and screening venue for Ministry of Information films. It wasn't until 1947 that it was equipped with dressing rooms and improved stage lighting, leading to a regular schedule of amateur productions under its new name, the Library Theatre. Throughout the years, the theatre underwent significant improvements, including the installation of dual-arc projectors and modifications to the stage and auditorium, making it a versatile venue for various activities. Over time, the Library Theatre became more than just a home for amateur theatre, hosting a diverse array of events, from film screenings, music concerts, and dance performances to lectures, comedy shows, and children's productions.
